Academic Background
Born in Mexico, Elena obtained a First Degree (Hons.) in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), after going through a preceptorship program at both the University of California Davis and the University of Minnesota. She then applied for an Internship in Equine Medicine, Surgery and Theriogenology at Louisiana State University, to subsequently being admitted for the Residency in Equine Surgery (ACVS) at the University of Missouri. Having completed the residency, she was appointed as a Clinical Instructor in Surgery at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center of Virginia Tech, where she stayed for one year before moving to Madrid, Spain to be a professor and surgeon at the Universidad Alfonso X “El Sabio”. Since 2013, she is a Faculty Member of the Department of Equine Medicine, Surgery and Science at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the UNAM, taking part as an equine professor and a senior surgeon. She is currently the vice president of the Mexican Equine Veterinary Association (AMMVEE).
