Raquel Baccarin, D.V.M, PhD
Academic Background
Dr Raquel Baccarin earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 1991 from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science at São Paulo State University (FMVZ/UNESP, Brazil). She subsequently completed two years of advanced training in Large Animal Surgery at the same institution. Following her residency, she worked as an equine medicine specialist, with a focus on jumping, dressage, and endurance horses.
She obtained her master’s degree in veterinary surgery and later earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Sciences from the University of São Paulo (USP) in the late 1990s. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Biology at the Paulista School of Medicine – Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP).
Throughout her career, Dr. Baccarin has held leadership roles in several professional organizations, including the Brazilian Association of Equine Veterinarians (ABRAVEQ). Internationally, she served as Head of the Local Organizing Committee for the 11th WEVA Congress (2009) and as Regional Ambassador for Brazil and South America for WEVA (2015–2018); she is currently a Member of the WEVA Board.
She also served as an equine veterinarian at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dr. Baccarin is Full Professor and Head of the Equine Internal Medicine Service at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of São Paulo/USP, and leads the research group Equiscience – Research Group in Applied Equine Medicine.
Her research focuses on cartilage and joint disorders, equine osteoarthritis, regenerative therapies (orthobiologics), rehabilitation of the locomotor system, welfare and athletic performance. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, contributed a chapter to the book Veterinary Physiotherapy (2009), and co-authored the Illustrated Guide for Perineural Injection in the Locomotor Limbs of Horses (2015) — both published in Portuguese — in addition to delivering numerous lectures at conferences, symposia, and congresses.
She remains deeply committed to promoting continuing education opportunities for veterinarians and mentoring students pursuing careers in equine veterinary practice.
